Chapter 8

“In the pre-dawn hours of June 24, part of the Champlain Towers South condo building in Surfside, Florida, suddenly collapsed. It literally pancaked,” Aunt Sophia said with grave seriousness. Aunt Anna bowed her head and made the sign of the cross. I could see Irma was visibly moved.

“I met those who perished that day. Most had a short stay. I was honored to show them the way out of purgatory and to heaven, with the help of a couple of angels, of course. Have to give them credit,” Irma said in a matter-of-fact tone. “Mainly Archangel Uriel, who is known as the angel of wisdom and is one of the archangels, along with Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. They surround God’s throne.

“You’ve met these archangels?” Lili, with amazement in her voice, asked Irma.

This was definitely new information about Irma. We knew she had a pipeline to Saint Peter, who assigned her work like Mission Impossible, but now we’re talking about exalted angels. What else did we not know about Irma?

“Of course. They come to purgatory to show the departed souls the way to heaven when their time in purgatory has come to an end,” Irma said. “We always have a going away party for those souls who are leaving. Archangel Uriel will show me the way one day,” Irma said and then added with a kindness in her voice I’ve never heard before. “I’m looking forward to leaving purgatory, but I’ll miss all of you.”

“I’ll miss you too, Irma,” I said, and truly felt a heavy sadness in my heart. Irma, despite being dead, has been a lifeline for me through the Cat 5 storm I endured after Jack dumped me for the bimbo. She sat right next to me on all the miles of my camping trips. She gave me the courage to tow my camper over 5,000 miles and keep going. I truly will miss Irma, as will Lili, who I can see was dabbing her eyes with a Kleenex.

For some reason, I had to ask Irma. Sometimes it’s perception or your gut feeling.

“Irma, has Saint Peter told you when you can…go?”

Irma’s voice returned with a sweetness that came from the depth of her soul.

“He’s told me I can leave whenever I want.”

“What!”

All of us simultaneously echoed the word.

“So why haven’t you left?”

Irma smiled and chuckled, “Not ready. I want to see my son Walt before I go. I want to see my grandchildren. Plus, to be honest, I don’t want to leave.”

“You don’t want to,” and then a light bulb went off in my head.

“Oh, you don’t want to?”

“Irma!”

We were all beside ourselves and if we could hug Irma we would, but we’d fall and break a hip. Well, I know I would.

“I feel like for the first time in my existence I’m doing some good for people. It’s a feeling I’ve never known. I’ve gotten to know archangel Uriel, and he’s been very nice and given me lots of tips.”

Since we couldn’t hug Irma, Lili and I hugged.
